Plover Patch
A trip to New York’s Jamaica Bay shows that piping plovers are holding their own in the city.

 

New restrictions on off-road vehicles traveling along North Carolina beaches underscored the importance of protecting shorebirds known as piping plovers (see "Piping Up for Plovers," Field Notes, September-October]. Recently, Audubon reporter Alexa Schirtzinger and videographer Indu Nepal checked out New York City's local plover population in Jamaica Bay, Queens. With the keen-eyed help of avid birder and former Gateway National Recreation Area park ranger Don Riepe, they captured some footage of the diminutive plover scanning the beaches for tasty invertebrate morsels.
